Title: " Innovation, Regulation, and Biomedical Business in Germany and the United States"
With rapid expansion of biomedicine industry in recent years – including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and allied firms – health care has superseded other sectors to generate between 12 and 18 percent of total GDP in advanced industrialized nations. Yet benefits are distributed unevenly, and countries are pursuing different strategies for cost containment, regulation, and support of innovation. This talk compares long-term trends in Germany and the United States, with a focus to the interplay between innovation and regulation in the pharmaceutical business. Our discussion will build on this perspective to more generally explore regulation and innovation in the two countries and elsewhere.
